She's prone to massive exaggeration and storytelling, yet she is given a truth reader called an alethiometer. To say that she has some conflicting traits is to put it mildly. Here's the kicker, though: Lyra's major paradox is that she's destined to play a huge part in the fate of mankind, but, as the Master tells us, she must choose her own path to get there.

In the beginning, she only did it to avoid punishment or to entertain and deceive other children. But later she does it to save her life and that of others. She could even outsmart Iofur Raknison.
